Take Amtrak’s Vermonter directly from New York Penn Station / Moynihan Train Hall to Northampton, Massachusetts.
Search NYP → NHT. Other departures may involve a train change; check the itinerary before booking.
- Board in Manhattan.
Choose the direct Vermonter for a journey without changing trains.
- Step off in Northampton.
Arrange an Uber, taxi, or car service for the last leg to The Silo.
- Settle into your own space.
The host estimates about 15–20 minutes by car from the station, depending on traffic, plus any pickup wait.
Arrange your station transfer ahead where possible; rideshare availability varies, especially late at night.
Leave the driving
to someone else.
Search Peter Pan for Boston South Station → Amherst UMass. Campus is close to The Silo, making it a useful arrival point.
Check whether your departure is direct or connects in Springfield, and confirm the exact stop on your ticket.
- Choose your bus departure.
Compare departure times and transfers for your dates.
- Arrive at UMass.
Peter Pan serves Haigis Mall, near the Fine Arts Center.
- Make the short final connection.
Use a local ride with luggage, or consult the campus walking map before choosing to walk.
Prefer to include a train?
One option is MBTA commuter rail from Boston to Worcester, then PVTA’s B79 bus to UMass. Check the B79 operating days, fare and connection times before buying tickets.
Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited also links Boston and Springfield. You still need an onward connection to Amherst; this is not a direct train to Northampton.

There’s a bus stop across the street, UMass is about a 10-minute walk away, and Amherst Center is about a mile from The Silo.
Combine walks, local buses and an occasional ride around your plans. For farther-flung outings, a car may give you more flexibility.
